Biography

Is a graduate of the Glass Design Department of Riga Secondary School of Design and Art and the Visual Communication Department of the Latvian Academy of Art. Currently she is a Master’s student at the Animation Section of the Art and Design Department of Luzern University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Switzerland. Her work has appeared in comics published in Japan, Switzerland, Slovenia and Latvia. She has worked as graphic designer for the packaging design agency ARD Design Switzerland, and has created illustrations for the labels on the packaging of the Madara Drinks and Madara Cosmetics Ecobaby product series. Melece received a diploma at the video art festival Ūdensgabali 2007 and a special prize from the Avantis organisation at the 2ANNAS international short film festival (2008) for the animated film “Vilma Doesn”t Work Today” (Vilma Šodien Nestrādā).

Since 2006 she has taken part in international projects, festivals and group exhibitions in Latvia, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. For her illustrations to the book “The School of Living Wrong” by M. Dobele (Nepareizas dzīves skola. R.: liels un mazs, 2008) she was nominated for the 2008 Annual Prize for Book Publishing and the 2009 Jānis Baltvilks Prize, and received a diploma at the 3rd Tallinn Illustration Triennial in 2009.

 

A children’s book is a pasture for the imagination. And the illustrations represent the visible side of imagination,
which doesn’t impose the truth on us, but instead shows us that you can also look at things a different way. (Anete Melece)
